@gregkoblentz @OPCW CWC Article II.7. currently reads as follows. “Riot Control Agent” means: Any chemical not listed in a Schedule, which can produce rapidly in humans sensory irritation or disabling physical effects which disappear within a short time following termination of exposure.

@gregkoblentz @OPCW To further affirm the unsuitability of CNS-acting chemicals for use as riot control agents, it will be important to amend the Chemical Weapons Convention’s Article II.7 (which defines riot control agents) by expunging the language “or disabling physical effects”.

Fantastic snapshot from history: Report of the Conference on Disarmament 1987 (Berlin Wall still up) including a negotiation draft of the Chemical Weapons Convention with „provisional“ lists of scheduled chemicals (104, 112, 115). Looks familiar? #OPCW https://t.co/ZOKx8sPogG

The WCO Strategic Chemicals list featured in Annex V of the STCE includes many of the chemicals found in the Chemicals Weapons Convention (CWC) Schedules, the Australia Group (AG) Chemical Weapons Precursors list … @RichardCupitt @gregkoblentz @GPWMDofficial

As proud host nation of the @OPCW, we’re happy with the adoption of the resolution on UN-OPCW cooperation in the 🇺🇳 General Assembly today.

The OPCW’s work is indispensable - especially in times where the world is confronted with recurring allegations of chemical weapons use.
